Writing/Book Coach

Dear Writer,

I’ve been working with writers for almost forty years as an independent writing and book coach, along with teaching in MFA programs and writing workshops.  Helping writers launch, develop, and finish their projects has always been my favorite part of teaching.

The beautiful thing about writing is that it’s a lifelong vocation, and it doesn’t matter when you start.

  • Get in touch here if you’re interested in starting, developing or finishing a project.
  • The first 30-minute meeting is free, via phone, zoom, or in-person meeting—maybe this is all you need to get going!
  • My specialty is nonfiction, especially memoir, personal essay, and writing about trauma.
  • I’ve also worked with fiction, poetry, and screenplay.
  • I believe in encouraging, supportive, no-nonsense guidance and feedback. I want you to keep writing and meet your goals.
  • My hourly rate is $165.
  • In our 30-minute free meeting, we can create a plan tailored to your goals and timeframe. I also offer several packages:
    • Whole manuscript consultation., $3500 for up to 80,000 words (320 pages). I’ll provide a close reading of the manuscript, with specific notes; a detailed editorial letter, with guidance regarding structure, tone, pacing, characterization, and other relevant issues; and an in-depth meeting, after you have reviewed my notes and letter, about next steps.

    • Essay consultation, $450 for up to 5000 words (20 pages). As above, I’ll provide a close reading, editorial letter, and a meeting about next steps.

    • Coaching sessions, 2 hours for $300. If you’re just starting on a project, or wondering which project to move forward on, let’s meet twice to talk it through. Send me up to 2500 words of material (notes, outlines, synopses, drafts), and we’ll meet to discuss goals, strategies, and recommended reading.

My clients are writers at every age and stage. I’ve worked in-depth with writers in the Queens University of Charlotte’s MFA program, the Cedar Crest College Pan-European MFA Program, the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, and the Fine Arts Work Center at Provincetown. I’ve also given talks and workshops at San Miguel de Allende Writers’ Conference, the Baltimore Writers’ Conference, the South Carolina Writers’ Festival, the Power of Words Conference, the Examined Life Conference, and the Association of Writers & Writing Program’s annual conference.

If you’re ready to focus on a writing project, get in touch here.

With all good wishes for your work,

Kathryn
